We’re Activating Community Engagement in Weardale!
Northern Powergrid is gearing up to deliver a brand new domestic demand side response project in the Weardale area of County Durham and we’re on the lookout for customers living in that area to get involved.
We want to find out whether the approach we’re trialling can reduce demand for electricity during the 4-8pm peak and support the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy.
Activating Community Engagement (ACE) is a community initiative that will reward customers for making small changes to how and when they use electricity. In return for being flexible, those involved have the chance to win individual prizes and help a community group or local good cause of their choice to win a share of £5,000 from a Northern Powergrid sponsored prize fund.
Free smart plug worth £55
If you live in Weardale or the surrounding areas and want to take part in the ACE trial, we’ll give you a free smart plug that gives you the power to control household appliances of your choice remotely through a mobile app. As soon as the plug is set up and connected to a household appliance (you could choose anything from your TV to your kettle), you will start earning points which are collected by GenGame – the online game that’s being used to help power the project.
Bonus points are earned if players agree to have their chosen appliances switched off temporarily at certain points in the week, so this is where we will be testing the effectiveness of residential DSR solutions.
Points mean prizes
Everyone that takes part in the ACE project can choose a local community group or good cause to support and we’re currently on the lookout for groups from the Weardale area to take part. We’re welcoming applications from a wide range of different organisations, including Scouting groups, amateur sports clubs, pensioner groups, voluntary organisations and parent teacher associations (PTAs).
All points earned go towards supporting your group and will help your team rise up an ACE league table within GenGame. We’ll be awarding prizes to individuals throughout the course of the project and to the winning teams at the end of the project, which starts officially in November 2015 and runs until February 2016.
